Пролистывая Вику на предмет "Александрос Панагулис (1939—1976) — деятель греческого сопротивления военной хунте", обнаружил, что его подруга (?), "girl-friend" (?) проходит по разряду:

"Domestic partner Oriana Fallaci (1973-1976)"

Это что-то новое, или хорошо забытое старое? Если перевести "сожительница", прозвучит грубо, "товарищ по борьбе" - слишком пафосно.

А domestic как существительное, это, кажется, прислуга, нет?

Конечно, "гражданский союз" или "гражданский брак" намного удобнее.. "Домашний", вероятно, возник, дабы подчеркнуть, что живут совместным домохозяйством.

"A domestic partnership is an interpersonal relationship between two individuals who live together and share a common domestic life but are not married (to each other or to anyone else), but they receive a lot of benefits that guarantee rights of survivor ship, hospital visitation and others.

use the term "domestic partnership" to mean what other jurisdictions call civil union, civil partnership, or registered partnership.
