Natalia Sokol and her children Kasper, Mama, and Troïtsa were violently kidnapped by a group of 10-15 so-called Swiss human rights activists at Wasserstrasse, 21 in Basel, Switzerland on 20 March 2016. The kidnappers in motorcycle helmets, armed with wooden sticks and shields, broke down the door to the Voina family apartment and attacked the family with tear gas. After several minutes of pleading by the father, Oleg Vorotnikov, to not use violence, some five people overcame him, beat him up, and tied him up with duct tape, leaving him incapacitated, after which another group abducted Natalia and the three children. At the time, the children were taking a bath and the perpetrators kidnapped them naked.[456]

Natalia Sokol, aka Koza, is the leader of the Russian highly political art-group Voina.

On April 28, 2015, Natalia Sokol announced in Switzerland, on occasion of a public event in Zürich, to ask for political asylum, claiming that her husband and her children aged four and six are still in Russia.[30]

She managed to arrive in Switzerland on the ninth month of her third pregnancy. However, Natalia came separately. Her two kids, Kasper (6 years) and Mama (3 years), as well as her husband, co-founder of Voina Oleg Vorotnikov, are unable to join her to come here legally, due to the fact that they still live without documents. Oleg Vorotnikov is among wanted persons in the Interpol list since November 2011.[31]

March 20, 2016, Natalia Sokol, Oleg Vorotnikov and their three children Kasper, Mama, and Troitsa were attacked by an armed mob of 20 people in their apartment in Basel.[32] The perpetrators broke the door to family's apartment, attacked the parents and children with tear gas and kidnapped the naked children while they were taking baths.[33] Then the perpetrators fixed Oleg's hands and legs with scotch tape and started to strangle him. After they blocked Oleg, the father of kids, they attacked Natalia, the mother of kids, and horribly beat her with wood sticks. The attackers robbed Voina's laptops and hard drives with the artistic and science archives and iPads of kids.[34]

November 10, 2017, Voina published the video documentation of the violent crime against the leaders of the group Oleg Vorotnikov and Natalya Sokol, and their kids in Basel, Switzerland.[35] The video shows an armed attack on the family of Vorotnikov and Sokol and the kidnapping of their kids by an armed group of the ‘Wasserstrasse’ organization,[36] self-proclaimed Swiss human right activists.[37]

The video of the crime was confiscated by the police.[38]

The Basel prosecutor office opened a criminal case against Natalia Sokol and Oleg Vorotnikov for their attempts to attract attention of the media to what happened to family in Basel, Switzerland, March 20, 2016.[39]

The official prosecution to identified perpetrators who attacked Voina family at March 20, 2016, are multiple kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, repeated attempts to endanger life, multiple coercion, physical assault, multiple attempts to inflict serious bodily injury, robbery, intentional appropriation of property, multiple material damage, violation of inviolability of home, trespassing, multiple violence and threat to authorities and officials public order disturbance.[40]

Amnesty International acknowledged the xenophobic nature of the attack on family in Switzerland.[41]

Vorotnikov stated (in an interview with Radio Free Europe) that the family wanted to return Russia but worries about the fate of their three children prevented this.[42]

On March 2, 2018, Voina arrived in Graz, Austria, to participate in the Elevate Festival under the topic 'Risk and Courage'.[43] At the festival, a documentary of the kidnapping Voina's kids by an armed group of Swiss extremists was presented to the public for the first time.[44] There was a scandal, provocation and some participants of the festival requested to be completely removed from this video recording.[45]

On September 11, 2018, Natalia Sokol and her three children were arrested in the residence of the Voina Group in the Eastern Alps, the Federal Land of Styria, just after the children returned from school.[46] Sokol and her children were escorted to the city prison of Graz (PAZ Graz: 8010 Graz Sauraugasse 1), where they all were imprisoned in the cell no. 303.[47]

On September 20, 2018, the European arrest warrant (EAW) for Sokol's husband, the leader of the Voina Group, Oleg Vorotnikov (Vor of Voina) on charges of illegal weapons possession and trafficking was issued by the Austrian police.[48]

The Austrian authorities used the 'Einsatzkommando Cobra' special anti-terrorism unit, equipped with helicopters and a squad with dogs to search and arrest Vorotnikov.[49][50] 'Cobra' stormed the Voina residence,[51] partly destroying the mountain chalet.[52]

On the appeal accepted by Judge Markus Mayrhold to consider at the Federal Administrative Court of the Republic of Austria in Vienna, the details of the arrest and imprisonment of Sokol and her children in Graz City Prison were revealed. As confirmed in court, Sokol and her children were kept in torture conditions and subjected to round-the-clock surveillance in prison. On September 12, 2018, the prison guards attacked the mother in front of the children. Two warders beat Sokol with an iron door of the 'family' cell no. 303 for a request to give the children their warm clothes confiscated during the arrest. Walks in the prison yard are prohibited both to mother and the children throughout the entire term of imprisonment.[53]

In May 2019, together with her husband and the leader of Voina Oleg Vorotnikov, Sokol was charged by the Austrian police with creating and running a militant anti-fascist group and arms trafficking. Citing a final version of the indictment, Sokol has been charged with involvement in the creation and leadership of a militant group called ‘Der Krieg’ (‘The War’ or ‘Voina’ in Russian).[54] Austria has issued an international warrant for Vorotnikov's arrest.[55]

The group's activity, according to the indictment, is aimed at inciting murder and violence, causing serious material damage to governmental property, military infrastructure, culture monuments and sites of religious worship as well as inflicting serious bodily harm on officials on duty and perpetrating a range of other offences.

Sokol is also charged with arms trafficking on the territory of Austria. In a previous indictment filed in January 2019, she was charged with weapons smuggling. However, that charge was dropped after all melee weapons and firearms seized from her at the time were found to be of Austrian origin.

Sokol and her three children were imprisoned in Austria until January 2019, and then transferred to the Traiskirchen refugee camp.[56] Sokol was taken into custody in September 2018 as Vorotnikov's alleged accomplice in the creation of Der Krieg and the arms trade.[57]

The murder of Reagan Tokes occurred on the night of February 8, 2017, in the Scioto Grove Metro Park in Grove City, Ohio. Tokes, a twenty-one-year-old student at Ohio State University, was abducted while leaving her job in Columbus’s downtown by Brian Golsby.[1][2] Golsby robbed and raped Tokes, and forced her to drive to the Scioto Grove Metro Park.[3][4] There, he forced her to strip naked and marched her into a field where he shot her twice in the head just shortly before midnight. Her body was found the following morning.[4]

Golsby had recently been released from prison where he had served a six-year sentence for kidnapping a pregnant woman and her child and raping the woman. He had pled down to robbery and attempted rape.[4] He was staying at a temporary housing program.[4][5] The officials at the housing program[5][6][7] and his parole officer[4][5] did not monitor him, and he violated probation[8] and committed six robberies without being arrested before murdering Tokes.[6]

The murder of Rachael Anderson occurred on January 28, 2018, in Columbus, Ohio.[1][2] Anderson, a twenty-four-year-old aspiring funeral director,[3] was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by Anthony Pardon in her apartment on her birthday.[4][5][6][7] Pardon, a registered sex offender[7] with an extensive criminal history, left Anderson's body in her bedroom closet where she was discovered the next day. A significant amount of evidence linked Pardon to the crime, including cellphone data and DNA.[8] He was arrested[9] and charged with Anderson's murder.[10] He was convicted[8] in 2020 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.[11]

Background

Anderson celebrated her twenty-fourth birthday on January 26 and January 27, 2018. On the 26th her brother John came from Warren to Columbus to stay with her. The next day, Anderson and her brother went to the home of their friend John Kennedy. There, the Andersons, the Kennedys and other friends had a party to celebrate Anderson's birthday. The Anderson siblings spent the night at the Kennedy's house and came back to Anderson's home on the 28th. Anderson worked on both the 26th and 27th. During the times she was at work she gave her brother her key so that he could come and go as he wanted. On the 28th John Anderson went back to Warren and accidentally took the key with him.[39] At around 1:00 PM Anderson texted the Kennedys, who owned a key to her home, and said that she would come and pick up their key. Because they were giving a friend a ride to Athens, Ohio, she had to come and get the key later when they returned home.[40] Later that day, at 6:17 PM, Anderson texted the Kennedys saying she would leave in twenty minutes to come and get the key.[39] She spoke to her mother at around 6:30[40] and then went and got her key from the Kennedys.[41] Because her apartment door could only be locked from the outside with a key, Anderson had to leave it unlocked. She stopped at an Arby’s on the East Side at around 7:30[42] and then went home.[39]

Crimes

Pardon entered Anderson's apartment at about 8:00 pm.[43] He kidnapped Anderson, taking her from the downstairs of her apartment to the upstairs.[44] He restrained her, tying her feet and ankles together with the cord from her hairdryer and binding her hands with her belt and cords from her blinds. He then wrapped the cord from Anderson’s curling iron between the hairdryer cord and over her wrists, hogtying her.[45] He also gagged her.[5] Pardon forced Anderson to tell him her PIN number.[46] He also tortured her[47] and raped her.[6][48]

Pardon strangled Anderson with the cord from an electric blanket. In addition to being asphyxiated,[49] Anderson also suffered blunt trauma and a stab wound in her head.[2][50]

Pardon placed Anderson into her bedroom closet. He left her there,[7][26] naked from the waist down[51] and with the electric blanket cord tied around her neck and the door knob.[49]

After murdering Anderson, Pardon stole her car.[52] He also took her credit card and debit card and used them at several stores in Columbus. He gave his sister the debit card[53] and went shopping with her.[54] Pardon's sister later learned that the card belonged to a murder victim when she watched the news.[53]

Pardon also gave the debit card to a homeless man named Anthony Sleets,[52] claiming that his girlfriend was trying to take his money after a falling out,[54] and offered to buy Sleets a hotel room if he used the card.[52] Pardon gave Sleets Anderson's PIN number[55] and drove Sleets to several ATMs.[54]

On January 29, Anderson failed to come to work or answer her phone.[6] The office supervisor of Shaw Davis Funeral Home asked a coworker who was out doing deliveries, to go to Anderson’s apartment to check on her. He went to Anderson's home and when she failed to respond, he went to the rental office and explained the situation. Because neither Anderson's co-worker nor employees at the rental office were allowed to enter Anderson's home, her co-worker contacted police. Police responded and had the rental agent inspect Anderson's apartment, but the rental agent did not locate Anderson.[56]

Afterward, Anderson's former roommate gave her friend Johnathan Kennedy permission to inspect the apartment. Kennedy entered Anderson's bedroom, which he found out of place.[41] He testified that he tried to look in the closet but when he tried to pull the door open it felt like something was pulling it back.[56] When he was able to open the closet door, he found Anderson's body. He tried to help her but realized she was dead[41] and went outside and notified officer Frank Sclafani.[57]

Investigators responded, finding Anderson's bound body partially wrapped in a comforter.[58] There was also a shirt wrapped around her head and a black clothing item knotted around her neck and shoved into her mouth.[59]

An autopsy performed on Anderson's body determined that she had been strangled and stabbed.[13] She suffered a laceration to her scalp and fractures in the base of her skull. The stab wound went through the back of her neck[60] and penetrated the left cerebral hemisphere and internal capsule of her brain.[50] Anderson was stabbed with so much force that part of her skull broke off.[61] The autopsy also revealed that Anderson was strangled with the cord from an electric blanket[42] and that the strangulation led her to suffer hemorrhages in her sternocleidomastoid muscles and eyelids and caused the vessels in her eyes to become overfilled with blood.[50] Additionally, it showed that Anderson had bruises and red marks on her ankles and wrists, indicating that she was alive when Pardon bound her.[50]

The coroner who performed Anderson's autopsy found that Anderson's death was caused by the stab wound to her head and neck, though the coroner who testified at the trial said had he performed the autopsy, he might have ruled that she died of ligature strangulation.[50]

Pardon's DNA was found on several parts of Anderson's body and at the crime scene. Investigators also found his DNA inside her body when they performed a rape kit.[62][63]

Location service apps and Pardon's email account on his phone allowed investigators to collect data showing where his phone was located at various times.[8] Data showed that he was at Anderson's apartment from 7:59 to 9:25 PM on January 28, 2018.[64] After police discovered that Anderson’s debit card was missing, they examined bank records.[65] Using cell phone data, they matched Pardon’s whereabouts to the use of her card.[66] Surveillance video also showed Pardon and his sister using Anderson's debit card, as well as Pardon using Anderson's credit card[53] and driving her car.[52] Investigators also spoke to Anthony Sleets after video footage showed him using her card.[65] Sleets told them that a man matching Pardon’s description gave it to him[52] though by the time Pardon became a suspect, Sleets had died.[55] Video showed Pardon and Sleets driving Anderson’s car hours after she was murdered.[52]

six-year-old Scottish girl Alesha

On 2 July 2018, six-year-old Scottish girl Alesha MacPhail was abducted from her bed and murdered by 16-year-old Aaron Campbell. Alesha, from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, was three days into a stay with her grandparents on the Isle of Bute when Campbell entered their unlocked home at approximately 02:00 AM. The teenager had previously bought cannabis from Alesha's father Robert, who lived in the house, and initially went to steal the drug. Upon finding the child asleep, Campbell picked her up, carried her to an abandoned hotel, then raped and killed her by applying pressure to her face and neck. Alesha was reported missing at 06:23 GMT, and her body was discovered by a member of the public at 08:54 GMT.

Police Scotland charged Campbell with abduction, rape and murder on 5 July 2018. He denied any involvement and pleaded "not guilty" when his trial began on 11 February 2019. He logged a "special defence of incrimination" by claiming that Robert's girlfriend, Toni McLachlan, was responsible for murdering the child and framing him. Campbell was tied to the crime by CCTV footage, DNA, and fibres from his clothing, and the jury returned a guilty verdict after three hours of deliberation. A ban on publicly naming Campbell was lifted following his conviction. On 21 March 2019, he was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years; subsequently reduced to 24 years on appeal. He confessed to the crime before his sentencing, adding that he was "quite satisfied with the murder".[1]

MacPhail's parents separated when she was three months old. Her father Robert (aged 26 in 2018) lived in Rothesay, the principal town on the Isle of Bute, with his parents and his girlfriend Toni McLachlan (aged 17 in 2018). Alesha would visit her father and grandparents every other weekend. On 28 June 2018, at six years old, she joined her family in Rothesay for what was meant to be three weeks of the school summer break.[4]

Aaron Thomas Campbell[2] was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England on 7 May 2002. He moved to the Isle of Bute when he was four or five years old with his mother Janette, father Christopher, and a younger sister.[7]

Campbell's upbringing included elements of physical and emotional abuse, and he often argued with his alcoholic mother. He was tested for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and had a history of self harming and depression.[7][8] Campbell attended Rothesay Academy and was popular among his friends, with whom he regularly drank alcohol and attended parties.[2][9] He was fit and active,[2] while also keen on gaming; he wished to be a YouTube star and posted several videos to the website.

When he was aged 15, Campbell began to consider "doing something excessive" such as rape.[7] In 2017, he sent a Facebook message saying that he "might kill 1 day for the lifetime experience".[10] He was entered into a rehabilitation programme when he was caught starting fires.[11]

Campbell was acquainted with Robert MacPhail and Toni McLachlan, and claimed to have had a casual sexual relationship with McLachlan in the winter of 2017,[7] although McLachlan denies this.[12] He purchased cannabis from the couple on multiple occasions, but these interactions ceased in early 2018 following a disagreement and intervention from Campbell's mother.[13]

Abduction and murder

On 1 July 2018, three days into her summer visit, Alesha was put to bed in her room at her grandparents' seafront home with a Peppa Pig DVD playing. At around 23:00, McLachlan checked on the child and noticed that she was asleep.[4] The key was left in the front door, as was common in Rothesay.[13]

The same evening, 16 year-old Campbell invited fifteen friends to his house, where he became drunk. The party finished before midnight, but at 00:30 on 2 July, a friend returned and found Campbell in bed and "suicidal".[7][10] Campbell claimed, "I was quite upset as my mum had been arguing with me most of the night."[7] The friend was "quite worried for him" and offered to stay over, but Campbell declined and said he was going to "get stoned".[10] He sent messages to several people asking if they were available to sell him cannabis, including Robert MacPhail.[10] At 01:47 and 01:48 he called McLachlan but received no response.[14]

Intending to steal cannabis, Campbell left his house at 01:54 armed with a kitchen knife.[15][16] He entered the MacPhail property, roughly a five-minute walk away, where Alesha's room was closest to the front door. When he found the sleeping girl, Campbell saw a "moment of opportunity", later claiming, "All I thought about was killing her once I saw her."[7] He lifted a drowsy Alesha from her bed, left the house without anyone noticing, and walked with her along the ocean shore. The child awoke in his arms during this walk and asked who he was; Campbell replied that he knew her father and was taking her home. He carried Alesha to a secluded location then raped and murdered her. He threw his clothes into the sea, went home for a shower, then returned to the murder site to retrieve his phone.[7][17]

13-year-old Jayme Lynn Closs

On October 15, 2018, 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson abducted American 13-year-old Jayme Lynn Closs from her family's home in Barron, Wisconsin. The attack took place at 12:53 a.m after he forced his way inside and fatally shot her parents.[2] Patterson took Closs to a house 70 miles (110 km) away in rural Gordon, Wisconsin, and held her in captivity for 88 days until she escaped on January 10, 2019.[3][4]

Jayme Lynn Closs (born July 13, 2005) is the only child of James and Denise Closs of Barron, Wisconsin.[9][10] On October 5, 2018, Jake Patterson drove to the Closs home to kidnap Jayme Closs. Activity in the home deterred him, as he was afraid he would leave witnesses. Patterson made a second attempt two days later but again aborted for the same reason. On October 15, he made a third visit, this time armed with a shotgun. Shortly before 12:53 a.m. Central Time (05:53 UTC), Patterson parked his car at the end of the driveway. Wearing a black coat and ski mask, he approached the front door of the home, carrying the shotgun.[11] James Closs, 56, shone a light on Patterson through a glass pane in the front door and asked him to show him his badge. Patterson called out, "Open the fucking door!" Patterson fired once, fatally shooting Closs. Forcing his way into the house, Patterson checked every room in the house because he wanted "no witnesses left behind."[12] He found the bathroom door locked and began shooting it down.[11] Inside the bathroom were Denise Closs, 46, and Jayme.[11] Denise was comforting Jayme, who was crying loudly.[12] At 12:53 a.m., Denise Closs made a 911 call.[13][14]

The police arrived four minutes after

While Denise Closs did not speak, the operator heard a disturbance and yelling before the phone call disconnected. When the dispatcher called the number back, they reached the voicemail of Denise Closs.[15] Patterson bound Jayme's wrists and ankles using duct tape, then fatally shot Denise Closs.[11] He dragged Jayme outside, almost slipping on blood,[16] placed her in the trunk of his car, and drove away.[11] The police arrived four minutes after the 911 call.[17] Patterson later told investigators that he pulled over 20 seconds down the road from the house.[11] Deputies sped by with emergency lights and sirens on.[18] Neighbors said they heard two gunshots but dismissed them since hunting was common around their homes.[19][20] After arriving at his cabin, Patterson made Closs change into a different pair of pajamas, then forced her under his mattress and sealed off all exits before going to sleep.[21]

Escape

Patterson believed that Closs was too afraid of him to make any escape attempts. He “never put special locks on doors because she wouldn’t escape.” They also slept on the same bed.[21] Patterson would rarely let Closs out of the cabin, only for brief walks on the lawn after checking for bystanders.[21] On the afternoon of January 10, 2019, Patterson told Closs he was leaving for a couple of hours. He put her under his bed before boxing her inside with his belongings, per his usual routine. After he departed, Closs pushed out the objects around the bed. She ran from the house wearing a light shirt, leggings, and a pair of Patterson's sneakers. Closs came across a local woman, Jeanne Nutter, walking her dog. Nutter recognized Closs from news reports and immediately took her to a neighbor's house.[22][23] After police were called, Closs told them "Jake Patterson" had killed her parents, taken her, and kept her prisoner just a few houses away from her current location in the neighborhood.[13] The neighbors described Closs as calm, quiet, dazed, and surprised that they recognized her from news coverage.

The police arrived around 4:45 p.m. and removed Closs from the area for her safety.[24] The description Closs provided for Patterson and his vehicle enabled deputies to spot his car just minutes afterwards when Patterson drove by the house.[25] After a deputy stopped him, Patterson exited his vehicle and said, "I did it."[24][26]

A hospital admitted Closs under guard. The next morning, they released her to the custody of her aunt, Jennifer Smith.[10] Hormel, the parent company of the Jennie-O store where Closs's parents worked, announced on January 24 that they would grant $25,000 reward money to Closs for rescuing herself.[27]

Patterson's parents divorced in 2007. He graduated from Northwood High School in nearby Minong, Wisconsin in 2015. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, but was discharged after one month at MCRD San Diego.[28][29]

Police did not believe Patterson had any social media contact with Closs or her family[30] and relatives of Closs did not recognize Patterson's name.[31] Patterson told authorities he saw Closs getting off a school bus outside the family residence in September while he was driving home from work and that he "knew that she was the girl he wanted to take".[32] Patterson's grandfather stated, "Something went terribly wrong, nobody had any clues... We are absolutely heartbroken. It's wrenching to deal with. He was shy and quiet, he backed off from crowds, but a nice boy, polite. Computer games were more of a priority than social interaction."[33]

While in jail in March, Patterson wrote a letter in response to questions sent to him by a reporter from a television station in Minneapolis. He apologized for his crimes and stated they were committed "mostly on impulse", contrasting with reports from the police that he had taken various measures in preparation for the crime.[41][42][43] He added that his intention from the beginning was to plead guilty in order to spare Closs and her family the trauma of the case going to trial.[43][44] Later that month, a television reporter in Minneapolis received a cell phone call from Patterson in which he briefly answered questions sent to him in a letter. Regarding the time Closs spent in captivity, Patterson said, "We were just like watching TV, playing board games, talking about stuff. We cooked a lot, everything we made was homemade, you know".[45]

The murder of Samantha Josephson, a student at University of South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina, occurred on March 29, 2019.[2] Josephson, 21, had ordered an Uber and mistakenly entered a car that she thought was her ride. Nathaniel Rowland used childproof locks to prevent Josephson from leaving the vehicle and kidnapped and murdered her, leaving her body near New Zion, South Carolina – 65 miles (105 km) from Columbia, where she had entered Rowland's car.[3]

Rowland was arrested the next day, and charged with kidnapping and murdering Josephson.[4] A trial began on July 20, 2021.[5] On July 27, the jury found Rowland guilty of Josephson's kidnapping and murder and the judge sentenced him to life in prison.[6][7][8]

The killing attracted national attention and led to discussion about the dangers of ridesharing and the importance of ensuring that a rideshare car is being driven by a registered driver prior to entering. The murder led to the passage of Sami’s Law in New Jersey, which enhances protections for drivers and passengers using ride share services. Legislation at the federal level is pending.[3][9]

Murder

Josephson spent the night before her death in the Five Points district in downtown Columbia with friends. At about 2:00 am she decided to leave the Bird Dog bar and ordered an Uber. According to surveillance footage, at 2:09, a black Chevrolet Impala, driven by Rowland, pulled up beside her. Josephson entered the vehicle, thinking it was her Uber driver. According to authorities, Rowland activated the child locks so that the doors could only be opened from the outside, thereby trapping Josephson inside the vehicle.[15][7][16]

Using a two-bladed knife, Rowland proceeded to inflict roughly 120 stab wounds upon Josephson. During the attack, Josephson attempted to shield herself. One of Rowland’s strikes went completely through her right hand, as she likely used it to protect herself. Rowland also stabbed Josephson in her head with enough force that the knife went through her skull to her brain. He also stabbed her in the carotid, one of two main arteries that carries blood to the head. Many of the wounds, especially those in her right neck and right shoulder, were close together, most likely resulting from being rapidly inflicted stab wounds. Additionally, Josephson suffered a severed hyoid bone, as well as stab wounds to her face, neck, shoulder, torso, back, lung, leg, and feet. She bled profusely, ultimately dying within 10-20 minutes, according to the pathologist who conducted an autopsy on her body.[17][9][18][19][20] Investigators believe Rowland dragged Josephson’s body to the New Zion field where she would later be discovered.[18]

Nathaniel Rowland was seen by police driving a car that matched the description of the one Josephson was seen entering in the surveillance video.[17] When Rowland, who was driving around the Five Points area where Josephson was kidnapped, was pulled over he got out of the car and ran away. He was caught[23] and was arrested at 3:00 am on March 30.[24] Inside the car, police found a container of liquid bleach, germicidal wipes, and window cleaner.[17] The car also contained Josephson's phone[25] as well as a large amount[16] of her blood, which was in the passenger seat and in the trunk.[17] Additionally, the child locks were activated, which police believe prevented Josephson from escaping.[16]

When investigators searched the trash behind Rowland’s girlfriend’s residence, they uncovered cleaning supplies and a two-bladed knife, both of which had Josephson’s blood on them. Josephson’s blood was also found on a sock and a bandana, both owned by Rowland. Additionally, Josephson’s DNA was collected from Rowland’s fingernails.[22][26][20]

Rowland was charged with kidnapping, murder, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.[25] In addition to Josephson’s murder, Rowland is alleged to have sold items that were stolen from a woman during a kidnapping in Columbia. The alleged victim was carjacked by two men while at a traffic light in October 2018. The carjackers allegedly physically assaulted the victim and then forced her to drive to an ATM where they robbed her of money,[24] before forcing her to drive to her home where they again robbed her of items including a Playstation 4.[27] According to Richland County deputies, hours after the alleged kidnapping Rowland sold some of the items stolen from the woman, including the Playstation 4, at a pawn shop. Rowland was charged with obtaining goods under false premises.[24]

On 8 November 2000, Smith met 21-year-old Jodie Hyde, a recovering butane gas addict from Alum Rock, Birmingham, at the Rainbow pub, and they were seen leaving together.[1][5] He took her to a hospital appointment[6] and later killed her. Prosecutors believed that he strangled her at his flat[6] and dumped her body near a recreation ground near Golden Hillock Road in Sparkbrook, where he set it alight. The still-smouldering remains were discovered at 6:15 am next morning (9 November) by two patrolling police officers. The body was barely recognisable and had to be identified using fingerprints. A subsequent post mortem concluded that she had been strangled before being rolled up in a carpet and set on fire.[1]

Three days later, Smith met Rosemary Corcoran, a 25-year-old mother of three from Castle Vale at the same pub, and again they were seen leaving together. It was seen on CCTV later that he had dragged her into his vehicle. He drove her to Worcestershire before bludgeoning her to death and running over her body near Droitwich Spa. Her face was unrecognisable and the attack was extremely brutal. She was found at 8:30 am on 12 November by a man walking his dog in a lane near Junction 5 of the M5 motorway.[1][5][7] Smith's third victim was Carol Jordan, a 39-year-old care home worker and mother of six from Balsall Heath,[5] who was killed as she walked to work. Smith hit her from behind with his car while driving back from Worcestershire, fracturing her hip. Fearing that he would be caught, Smith moved her to another location and beat her so much that dental records were required to identify her corpse.[1][8] The body was discovered at 8:50 am on 12 November on parkland next to Bell Barn Road, Lee Bank.[1]

Leanne Tiernan (27 September 1984 – 26 November 2000), a pupil at West Leeds High School,[9] was last seen alive at 4.50 pm on 26 November 2000 when she and her friend, 15-year-old Sarah Whitehouse, returned to Bramley by bus after a shopping trip to Leeds city centre.[5] The girls parted company at Houghley Lane, and Whitehouse last saw her setting off along an unlit path through an area of wooded wasteland known as Houghley Gill.[5][10] When Whitehouse arrived home, she telephoned Tiernan's home and was surprised to find she was not there. At 5.20 pm, Tiernan's mother rang her mobile phone to find out where she was, but the phone rang out for some time and then cut off. When she rang it again, it was cut off after four rings. At 7.00 pm, she rang the police and reported her daughter as a missing person.[11]

The police immediately began a missing person inquiry, headed by Detective Superintendent Chris Gregg, and a search of the area where Tiernan was last seen was undertaken, although no trace of her was found. As the inquiry progressed, it became one of the largest ever undertaken by West Yorkshire Police, involving up to 200 officers and hundreds of volunteers

Discovery of body

On 20 August 2001, Tiernan's body was found by Mark Bisson, who was walking his two dogs in Lindley Woods, North Yorkshire, 100 yards from where another murder victim, Yvonne Fitt, had been discovered buried in 1992.[2][14] Tiernan was identified from her fingerprints on 22 August 2001, and Det. Supt. Gregg announced that the inquiry had now become a murder investigation, codenamed Operation Conifer.[15] Tiernan's body had been wrapped inside nine green plastic bin bags secured with twine, with a black bin bag secured around her head with a leather dog collar, then placed inside a floral-patterned duvet cover.[14][16]

Tiernan's Ellesse coat and black boots were not found. Plastic cable ties had been used as a ligature to strangle her and more ties had been used to bind her hands. A dark coloured scarf was also wrapped around her neck.[16][17] Her hair was still tied in a ponytail with the same band and hairclips that she had been wearing when she disappeared.[18]

The state of decomposition of Tiernan's body led some forensic experts to believe that after her death she had been kept in cold storage or a freezer up until a few weeks before the body was found, in part to avoid detection and in part as a trophy.[19] A cryobiology expert was called in to examine the microstructure of Tiernan's cardiac tissue, and concluded that the body could have been kept frozen for some time, taking into account the air temperatures for the months between her disappearance and the discovery of the body.[20][21]

Police made a public appeal for anyone who might have been in Lindley Woods recently or had information about others who regularly visited the area to come forward and contact police.[22]

John Taylor

John Taylor (b. 27 August 1956, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire) was a parcel delivery worker for Parcelforce, and lived on the same housing estate as Tiernan, within a mile of where she was last seen alive. He was known locally as "the pet man," as he kept a number of dogs and ferrets and sold pet food, and was also known to be a poacher. His only previous conviction was for theft of a suit when he was 15 years old and he was considered by his neighbours to be trustworthy and "ordinary."[5][23] Following their appeal for information, Taylor's name was given to the police separately by two former girlfriends of Taylor who had met him through lonely hearts columns, both saying that he had driven past the woods in their company and boasted of poaching there regularly.[5][21]

Inquiries into Taylor's background

As police began to conduct thorough inquiries into Taylor's background, they discovered that he was a frequent user of lonely hearts advertisements.[24] Through his telephone records they identified the women he had contacted in this way and began to interview them.[25] One woman who had dated Taylor disclosed that Taylor told her he liked tying women up and locking them in a cupboard. Another said that Taylor had told her that he had a fetish for "bondage, whips and ties," and said that he wanted to tie her daughter up with cable ties and have sexual intercourse with her.[7][21][26][27] A former girlfriend, who had briefly lived with Taylor, told police that she had often visited Lindley Woods with him while they were dating, and that she had eventually broke off the relationship with him because of his bondage fetish and the feeling "that she was being raped".[25][26][27] When asked by police to describe how Taylor would tie her, she described his practice of securing a plastic cable tie around each of her wrists, then tying her hands behind her back by using a third cable tie to link them.[25][28] This was exactly how Tiernan had been found. She also said that Taylor kept a bundle of the cable ties in a drawer next to his bed.[25] Two other women also said that Taylor enjoyed bondage during sex, and had bound their breasts and hands with cable ties.[24]

Arrest of Taylor

Taylor, who lived alone after his wife had divorced him in 1996, was arrested on suspicion of murder on 16 October 2001.[24] Police immediately sealed off his house and gardens and a patch of wasteland to the rear of the property.[30] The gardens were then excavated and the property, including three large chest freezers, subjected to a rigorous examination over a period of ten days.[31]

When interviewed by police, Taylor eventually admitted kidnapping Tiernan. His explanation was that he had not visited Haughley Gill for many years, but by chance had been there on the afternoon that Tiernan went missing. He said that she had walked past him and on impulse he had seized her from behind, tied her hands behind her back with a dog leash, covered her head with his jacket and forced her to walk to his home in nearby Cockshott Drive.[32] He then forced her into his bedroom and onto the bed where, during a struggle, she had fallen off the bed, striking her head on the floor. He said that he had then picked her up by the scarf around her neck, at which point she had died, and claimed that her death was an accident.[21] He said he had panicked and hidden her body in Lindley Woods.[5]

The police and prosecution maintained that he cable tied her hands behind her back in the bedroom in preparation for rape, and then used a cable tie as a ligature to murder her when her blindfold slipped and she saw his face.[8][21] When asked why he had abducted Tiernan, he replied: "I have no idea".[7] When police challenged his version of taking the body to Lindley Woods soon after the murder, he claimed that he had first kept the body hidden underneath pallets in his back garden, and then stored her inside his sofa.[24]

As the police now had Taylor's DNA profile they were able to review other unsolved sex attacks in the locality where forensic evidence was still available for DNA extraction. Two rapes in particular stood out as they had both been committed on the estate where Taylor lived. The first took place on 18 October 1988 when a 32-year-old woman was attacked as she walked across Houghley Gill to collect her children from school. Taylor, who was wearing a mask and armed with a knife, forced her to carry out oral sex and then raped her.[19][35] The second rape took place on 1 March 1989 when Taylor, again masked and wielding a knife, broke into the home of a 21-year-old woman in the middle of the day. He forced her into the bedroom, where he undressed her, blindfolded and gagged her, and then forced her to commit oral sex before raping her.[19] Her small child was present in the house at the time.[35] Taylor was formally rearrested in October 2002 and charged with the rapes. Although Taylor initially refused to cooperate with the police, the DNA evidence was overwhelming, and he eventually pleaded guilty to both rapes on 4 February 2003 at Leeds Crown Court.[8][36] Judge Norman Jones QC, the Recorder of Leeds, sentenced him to two terms of life imprisonment and "expressly dis-applied early release provisions".[19]

On April 6, 2001, Anne Sluti (Sara Canning), an all-American 17-year-old from Kearney, Nebraska, is seen running on a track at her high school as her boyfriend, Gary, and her best friend, Paige, watch. Gary gives Anne a teddy bear for their anniversary. Anne then departs with her best friend, and as she arrives home, finds her brother, whom she has not seen for a while. After having dinner with her family, they show Anne the letter in which she has been accepted to a college. She stops at a store and goes to her car, but when she is about to get into her car, Tony Zappa (James Van Der Beek) comes up behind her and drags her to his car. Anne begins screaming as onlookers call 911; Anne escapes from the car but Tony punches her, throws Anne in the car, and drives off.

The police arrive. When one of the detectives tells Officer Mike Timbrook (LeVar Burton) that the car belongs to Anne Sluti, Officer Timbrook goes off to tell the Sluti family.

At night, Anne awakens, and Tony tells her that she should not have screamed. Anne says that she screamed because he was punching her, and soon realizes that Tony will not release her. Tony pulls the car over, and after binding her hands behind her back and blindfolding her, he tells her that if she can get out of the binding, she can leave. She cannot, and Tony returns her to the car.

After driving for some time, he removes the blindfold. The car suddenly crashes and flips on its side. Tony frees himself, but Anne, strapped in a seat belt with her hands still bound, is unable to do the same. Tony climbs back and cuts the seat belt, pulls her out of the car, and onto the grass. While she gasps for air, Tony says, "I saved your life. That means I own you."

She was held captive, shackled, raped, and tortured for four days in Tyree's basement, and he broadcast his actions via live streaming video. One viewer of Tyree's live streams reported his actions anonymously to the FBI, who tracked down Kozakiewicz and freed her. Kozakiewicz has become a motivational speaker and an advocate for missing persons.[318]

Kozakiewicz had corresponded online with someone she thought to be a boy of her own age—actually Scott Tyree[10] a 38-year-old man who lived in Herndon, Virginia—who approached her in a Yahoo chat room.[6] Over the course of nearly a year, Tyree groomed the 13-year-old Kozakiewicz. The Kozakiewicz family computer was located in the family room where internet activity could be monitored, but Tyree often contacted her at night while the rest of the family was asleep.[6]

Kidnapper
Alicia's kidnapper Scott William Tyree was born in 1963 to Erma Tyree. He graduated from Westmoor High School in 1981, married twice, had a 12-year-old daughter (who was staying with him during winter break and was sent back to her mother on the day Tyree kidnapped Alicia), and was divorced at the time of the kidnapping. His first wife, Sarah Tyree, said her husband was "a classic, long-haired computer guy" with an interest in science fiction and computer games. She said he had no prior brushes with the law.

After her rescue, Kozakiewicz was examined at a hospital and released to the custody of Fairfax County Child Protective Services.[10] Her parents, Mary and Charles Kozakiewicz, were unable to take a commercial flight to reunite with their daughter due to the heightened media attention. They were privately flown to Virginia by the FBI on the following day.[15]

In the aftermath, Kozakiewicz has developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)[4] and significant memory loss. Much of her life leading up to the abduction is difficult or impossible to recall. She has used counseling as a treatment method.[6] As an adult she said that in 2002 people found it impossible to understand how this had happened and how she had been groomed; they mostly blamed the victim, although some people were supportive.[16]

In September 2003, Tyree was sentenced to 19 years and 7 months in federal prison.[17] He was released in February 2019 from the Federal Correctional Complex, Butner.[18][19][20][21] and was assigned to a halfway house in Pittsburgh; protests against the location of his placement[22] eventually involved members of Congress in an unsuccessful effort to pressure the Federal Bureau of Prisons to move him farther away from Kozakiewicz's family.[23][24] The controversy became moot in October 2019, when Tyree was returned to prison for an additional two years for violating the terms of his parole by visiting pornographic sites.[25][26][27] He was released from prison once more on September 22, 2021.

On 21 March 2002, Amanda Jane "Milly" Dowler, a 13-year-old English schoolgirl, was reported missing by her parents after failing to return home from school and not being seen since walking along Station Avenue in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, that afternoon. Following an extensive search, Dowler's remains were discovered in Yateley Heath Woods in Yateley, Hampshire, on 18 September.

On 23 June 2011, Levi Bellfield, who had already had three life sentences with a whole life tariff imposed for the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amélie Delagrange and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, all of which had taken place after Milly Dowler's murder, was also found guilty of abducting and murdering Dowler and received another whole-life sentence. On 27 January 2016, Surrey Police announced that Bellfield had admitted to abducting, abusing and killing Dowler.

t 3:07 p.m. on 21 March 2002, Milly Dowler left Heathside School in Weybridge, Surrey, and walked to Weybridge railway station with a friend. The girls disembarked at Walton-on-Thames railway station, one stop before Dowler's usual stop of Hersham, and went to eat at the station café.[5] After Dowler telephoned her father at 3:47 p.m. to say she would be home in half an hour, the girls left the café at 4:05 p.m., with Dowler walking home alone.[5] She was last seen three minutes later[5] walking along Station Avenue, by a friend of her sister, who was waiting at a bus stop.[6]

A closed-circuit television camera located further along the road showed no images of Dowler.[6] A red Daewoo Nexia, which belonged to Levi Bellfield's girlfriend Emma Mills, was photographed driving past by the same camera at 4:32 p.m.[5] In an April 2009 interview, Bellfield said that he was driving the car.[7]

When Dowler failed to return home, she was reported missing to the police at 7:00 p.m.[8] A nationwide search for her followed, with 100 police officers and helicopters searching fields,[9] streets and rivers around Hersham.

On 18 September 2002, naked human remains were discovered by mushroom pickers in Yateley Heath Woods near Yateley, Hampshire.[4] They were later confirmed through dental records as Dowler's.[6][19] Due to the severity of the decomposition, the cause of death could not be ascertained. No items of Dowler's clothing or possessions—the purse, rucksack or mobile phone—she had with her at the time of her disappearance have ever been recovered.[1][20][21] The discovery of the body led the police to reclassify the case as a homicide investigation. Undertaken by Surrey Police, the investigation was code-named Operation Ruby.[22]

On 25 February 2008, Surrey Police confirmed that Levi Bellfield was their prime suspect in the murder inquiry and that they were "very interested" in questioning him following his conviction of the murders of two young female students and the attempted murder of a third.[31] On 30 March 2010, Bellfield was charged with Dowler's abduction and murder.[32] As a result, the inquest into the death was adjourned.[33] On 6 October 2010, Bellfield appeared in court via video link, as he was already serving three life sentences for murder and attempted murder, and was formally charged in relation to the Dowler case.[citation needed]

Levi Bellfield (born Levi Rabbetts;[3] 17 May 1968)[citation needed] is an English serial killer, sex offender, rapist, kidnapper, and burglar. He was found guilty on 25 February 2008 of the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amélie Delagrange[4] and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, and sentenced to life imprisonment.[4] On 23 June 2011, Bellfield was further found guilty of the murder of Milly Dowler.[5]

Modus operandi

At the time of the attacks, Bellfield ran a wheel-clamping business which operated in and around West Drayton, where he lived. Sutton speculated:[16]

[Bellfield] has a massive ego to feed, he thinks he's God's gift to everyone. He drives around in his car, feels a bit 'whatever' and sees some young blonde girl. Young blonde girl says 'go away' and he thinks 'you dare to turn down Levi Bellfield, you're worth nothing' and then she gets a whack over the head. It is shown in the case of Kate Sheedy. She was smart enough to think she didn't like the look of his car and crosses the road. He thinks 'You think you're so clever' and whoosh, he runs her over.

Bellfield was seen driving around in his van, talking to young girls at bus stops, while under police surveillance.[16] Amélie Delagrange was seen by CCTV cameras which showed her walking towards Twickenham Green after she missed her stop on the bus home.[16] She may have stopped and spoken to Bellfield between the last two sightings of her. She was attacked shortly afterwards.[16]

Personal life

Bellfield has fathered eleven children with five different women, the three youngest with his most recent girlfriend, Emma Mills.[8][50]

In May 2022 the Ministry of Justice confirmed that Bellfield was engaged and had applied to marry while in a prison. He proposed to a woman who had started writing to him two years previously, before becoming a visitor on a regular basis. Bellfield would need the permission of the governor at HM Prison Frankland.[51]
