«Северя́не» — полнометражный фильм голландского режиссёра Алекса Ван Вармердама 1992 года.
Сюжет
Действие фильма происходит в 1960-х годах в провинциальном нидерландском городке, состоящем из одной-единственной улицы. Сам Алекс ван Вармердам играет почтальона, тайно читающего письма его жителей.

A surreal black comedy set in a decrepit 1960's housing development. When Thomas' mother Martha is drawn into sainthood and changed their home into a shrine this frustrated his father the local butcher, Jacob and he finds it difficult to manage it all with his sexual needs. Thomas, 12-year-old son, becomes obsessed with events on the broadcast news - The liberation of the Belgian Congo is taking place and Thomas calls himself Lumumba, after the Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. Thomas spends hours alone in the forest. It is there that he meets Agnes, a half-naked woman who lives in the forest and hides at the bottom of a pond and shows him how to breathe under water by sucking on a stem. He is encouraged in this escapism by Simon, the postman who reads all the mail and knows all of the bizarre and intimate secrets of the eccentric inhabitants of the town. Meanwhile, Anton a gun-crazed forester moves around the forest in search of trespassers. He is incapable of meeting his wife, Elisabeth's needs. Adding further complications are two Belgian priests who visit the town, bringing with them an exhibition of Africana and a Negro. Jacob turns into a cad and attacks women. Thomas has sexual confrontations with Agnes, but often disturbed by his mother's "divine" premonitions. Anton who is engaged in activities outside his family life, captures Simon red-handed in his act (looking at the school teacher's subscribed adult magazine) and tries to capture the Negro. Anton accidentally kills Agnes and hides the body under the pond. The Negro sees this and blinds Anton. Later Anton seeks the Negro to kill and finds him, but leaves him alone. Elizabeth knowing she is pregnant with Jacob's child leaves Anton, since he has turned asexual. Meanwhile, Martha's fasting has rendered her bedridden and the villagers pray at her window believing her to be a saint rather than a depressed woman. The church officiates Martha as a saint. Things go beyond Jacob can handle. Later blind Anton is found dead from the cold under a tree by the Negro. The Negro leaves the Town. Later through the news its heard Lumumba is murdered, which saddens Thomas. Simon comes back to the settlement housing unit as the official post-master, Thomas welcomes him wholeheartedly.

На протяжении первой половины фильма действием движут вопросы «как?» и «почему?», но после определенного момента, а именно — окончательного проникновения Боргмана в дом и разум хозяйки, сюжетом завладевает вопрос «а почему бы и нет?» И если в начале мотивация персонажей вполне понятна, а сама картина напоминает скорее остросюжетный триллер, не лишенный юмора, то со временем она превращается в совершенную фантасмагорию. Психологизм сменяется едва ли не волшебством, на смену логичным действиям приходят малопонятные выходки. Кругом одни загадки: шрамы на спинах, воссоединение шайки жителей землянок и появление их подельниц, сомнительные убийства, яды, страсти на пустом месте — чего только нет. И каждый новый поворот сюжета приносит вопросы, но не дает ответов, отчего к концу фильма накапливается неприятное ощущение запутанности и усиливается потребность в содержательной развязке. Заканчивается же все тем, что живые люди приобретают черты мифических героев-функций, то есть лишаются человечности, а злодеи дают бесовское представление в ночи — своего рода ритуальный танец пред телами обреченных жертв.

Как признался режиссер в одном интервью, он хотел снять фильм, в котором будет больше вопросов, чем ответов, где главной темой станет наказание богатых жителей Запада за их безучастность, где угроза исходит от самых обычных людей. Фильм мрачный, загадочный, бессмысленный. Следует признать, что в этом господин ван Вармердам преуспел, только вот после сеанса ни отвечать на вопросы, ни думать о фильме не хочется, ведь ясно, что это лишь фантазия, игра воображения, хотя и талантливая.

The Dress is a tale filled with sex, violence, misery, comedy and drama as it follows the life of a dress and parade of lives. Conceived under a cloud of frustration and despair by the dressmaker, the dress becomes a wheel of misfortune in extraordinary sequence of events that envelopes both the dress and those fatefully drawn into its universe. An aloof artist, a school girl, an unfulfilled maid, a borderline train conductor and a broken business executive, all become involuntary players in a macabre game of tag. No one who comes in contact with the dress until it reaches its destination.

A brother and sister, Jacob and Marie, live with their father and mother. The family is in a situation where living becomes difficult for them. One day Jacob and Marie's father abandons the two of them in woods while they go collecting firewood. From that moment on, the two teens must fend for themselves, fighting off rape and taking on any possible situation, reacting to situations as if animals. Their mother put a note in Jacob's jacket telling them to go to their aunt and uncle in Spain, but they arrive to find them both deceased in an accident.

Not sure what to do, Jacob, feeling hungry, goes to buy a roll, and finds a note left by Marie that she has gone off to marry a rich man named Diego. Jacob arrives at the house, ominous in spite of its brightness, and finds much to distrust in Diego.

Diego, a surgeon, then plots to steal Jacob's kidney to help his sick sister Theresa. Diego drugs both Marie and Jacob and separates the brother and sister.

After Marie escapes, she finds Jacob severely injured in a stolen car and both brother and sister (reunited again) drive away. Suddenly they are chased by Diego in a car. In the chase Diego's car crashes off the road. Jacob and Marie take shelter in an abandoned house in an abandoned village. With the help of Marie, ailing Jacob gets healed.

As the days pass one windy day Diego comes in search to take Marie and kill Jacob. In the encounter by hide and seek Jacob kills Diego by shooting an arrow. Jacob and Marie bury Diego's body and on hearing sound they sneak under the house. Police come on routine patrol and search the house and leave.

Jacob and Marie sit relaxed beside a nearby flowing river and the credits scroll on.
