Ей приписывают введение таких новшеств, как ношение бриллиантов некоронованными особами, изобретение длинного шлейфа, ношение весьма вольных нарядов, открывающих одну грудь; её поведение и открытое признание связи с королём часто вызывало негодование, однако ей многое прощалось благодаря защите короля и её совершенной красоте, о которой даже Папа Римский говорил: «У неё самое прекрасное лицо, которое только можно увидеть на этом свете». За свою жизнь родила трёх детей.

Будучи беременной в четвёртый раз, неожиданно умерла. Сперва предполагалось, что она умерла от дизентерии, но потом в её убийстве был обвинён Жак Кёр. Версия не нашла большой поддержки и считалась заговором против Кёра с целью его дискредитации. Сейчас учёные уверены, что смерть Сорель произошла в результате отравления ртутью. "While pregnant with their fourth child, she journeyed from Chinon in midwinter to join Charles on the campaign of 1450 in Jumièges, wanting to be with him as moral support. There, she suddenly became ill, and after giving birth, she and her daughter died on 9 February 1450.[8] She was 28 years old.[9] While the cause of death was originally thought to be dysentery, French forensic scientist Philippe Charlier suggested in 2005 that Agnès died of mercury poisoning.[10] He offered no opinion about whether she was murdered.[10] Mercury was sometimes used in cosmetic preparations or to treat worms, and such use might have brought about her death. She was interred in the Church of St. Ours, in Loches. Her heart was buried in the Benedictine Abbey of Jumièges.[11]

Charles' son, the future King Louis XI, had been in open revolt against his father for the previous four years. It has been speculated that he had Agnès poisoned in order to remove what he may have considered her undue influence over the king. It was also speculated that French financier, noble and minister Jacques Cœur poisoned her, though that theory is widely discredited as having been an attempt to remove Coeur from the French court.

Her cousin Antoinette de Maignelais took her place as mistress to the king after her death.

Life

Antoinette was the daughter of Jean II de Maignelais and Marie de Jouy. Through her father she was a first cousin of Agnès Sorel, who served Charles VII as his titular mistress from roughly 1441 until her sudden death in 1450.

Even before her cousin's death, Antoinette had caught the king's eye. In 1448, when she was fourteen years old, he gave her the lands of Maignelais, which had been the object of a long lawsuit between her ancestor Raoul de Maignelais and the Duke de Bourbon. In the end, the estate had remained in the duke's possession.

Antoinette de Maignelais (French pronunciation: ​[ɑ̃twanɛt də mɛɲlɛ]; 1434–1474) was the chief mistress of Charles VII of France from 1450 until his death. The Baroness of Villequier by marriage, she replaced her cousin Agnès Sorel as the king's favourite mistress after Sorel's sudden death in 1450.[1] Later in life she was the mistress of Francis II, Duke of Brittany.[1] She acted as the spy on Charles VII on behalf of his son, Louis XI.
