Production

UCLA student Colin Higgins wrote Harold and Maude as his master's thesis. While working as producer Edward Lewis's pool boy, Higgins showed the script to Lewis's wife, Mildred. Mildred was so impressed that she got Edward to give it to Stanley Jaffe at Paramount. Higgins sold the script with the understanding that he would direct the film but he was told he wasn't ready, after tests he shot proved unsatisfactory to the studio heads. Ashby would only commit to directing the film after getting Higgins' blessing and then, so Higgins could watch and learn from him on the set, Ashby made Higgins a co-producer.[7] Higgins says he originally thought of the story as a play. It then became a 20-minute thesis while at film school. After the film came out, the script was turned into a novel then a play, which ran for several years in Paris.[8]

Первой самостоятельной работой стала чёрная комедия режиссёра Тони Ричардсона «Незабвенная», снятая по одноимённой повести Ивлина Во и получившая высокую оценку специалистов.

Attempting to turn a corner in his declining career, Ashby stopped using drugs, trimmed his hair and beard, and began to frequently attend Hollywood parties wearing a navy blue blazer so as to suggest that he was once again employable. Despite these efforts, he could only find work as a television director

Longtime friend Warren Beatty advised Ashby to seek medical care after he complained of various ailments, including undiagnosed phlebitis. He was soon diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that rapidly spread to his lungs, colon, and liver. Ashby died on December 27, 1988 at his home in Malibu, California.

Joan Marshall (born Joan Schrepfermann; June 6, 1931 – June 28, 1992)[1] was an American film and television actress.

She was born Joan Schrepfermann[2] on June 6, 1931[1] in Chicago, where she was also raised. At age 17, she suffered a bout of polio which temporarily paralyzed her vocal cords, leaving her unable to speak.[1] She began her career performing as a showgirl in Chicago clubs.

Marshall was married five times. She had three children with her first two husbands. Marshall's third marriage was to director Hal Ashby in August 1969;[5] she divorced him a year later in 1970, and married for a fourth time to Jeffrey A. Stein in 1978, whom she also divorced. In 1990 she married for a fifth time, this time to executive Mel Bartfield.[6] The couple relocated to Montego Bay, Jamaica, where they remained until her death, at age 61
