On 2 May 1945, in Kleinmachnow just outside Berlin, two Red Army soldiers stopped a Lampe demanding his papers. At this point, Lampe had lost so much weight he did not resemble the photograph on his papers. He was shot a few minutes later because he failed to explain himself to the soldiers.
